A TIME OF REFLECTION

Many reading this Nugget will have like me, sung the beautiful chorus: “Give Thanks”. For those among my readers who have not sung this chorus let me share the heart-felt words:

Give thanks with a grateful heart

Give thanks to the Holy One

Give thanks because he’s given Jesus

Christ, his Son

Give thanks with a grateful heart

Give thanks to the Holy One

Give thanks because he’s given Jesus

Christ, his Son

And now, let the weak say, “I am strong”

Let the poor say, “I am rich”

Because of what the Lord has done for us

Give thanks…………..

Yesterday I stumbled on the history behind this chorus and it is so fitting for this season of reflection that I want to share the events with you!

The writer of the chorus was a man by the name of Henry Smith.

Henry Smith has written over 300 songs during his lifetime, but only one of them has ever been published! The song that finally did get published was, “Give Thanks,” and has proved to be one of the most popular and beloved worship songs of the last 30 years!

Talk about “stick- ability”! I am sure many less enterprising souls would have thrown in the towel of constantly having rejection slips on the music they were writing.

Smith had been writing hymns and spiritual songs for many years when he penned “Give Thanks” in 1978. His pastor in Williamsburg, Virginia, preached a sermon one Sunday that highlighted how Jesus made himself poor so that we could gain untold riches in Him. Smith, listening to the sermon thought that sounded like a good idea for a song and proceeded to craft this powerful but simple chorus.

He and his soon-to-be wife Cindy sang the song a number of times over the coming weeks. A young military couple heard it, learned it and took it with them when they returned to Germany. “As far as I know that is how my song got to Europe,” Smith explains. “It did a lot of traveling before Integrity Music published it.” (Quote from Henry Smith)

Eight years later, “Give Thanks” was recorded by Integrity’s Music! The song was listed as “author unknown,” but a friend of Smith’s recognized it and brought the error to his attention. Integrity gratefully signed a publishing agreement with Smith, and the song quickly became known around the world. At one point, it was one of the three most frequently sung songs in American churches!

I found the history behind this song thrilling. What struck me was that for years this chorus that reflects the believer’s heart of gratitude was hidden and unknown yet it did not change the power of the words!

Maybe some of my readers can relate to the feeling of “being unrecognized” in the realm of the church world, while others seem to be continually heaped with the accolades from those in leadership.

Let me pose this question to you……………………………………………..

Did going “unrecognized” change the power of the words?

Absolutely not! If anything it made the truth of the chorus even more powerful.

Those “unseen heroes” of the faith are not forgotten by God! He is keeping “accurate records” and when eternity rolls around and the “books are opened” these “unsung heroes” names will stand out in living color.

Aaah yes my friends………………………………………

One day, in our Father’s House, the table will be set and supper will be ready.

One day you and I and all of the Father’s children will be seated around that table.

One day our Father will preside as He gathers us to Himself, listening intently and lovingly as we share our love for each other and our love for Him.

One day My Father’s House will be filled with His family, and it won’t get any better than that!
