FAITH – FLEXIBILITY & FIRMNESS
In yesterday’s Nugget I shared how the Lord was encouraging each one of us to trust His leadings even if it requires taking a quantum leap in faith.
So, how does faith work in this ever changing world that we live in?
When our faith runs into obstacles, we need to be pliable or flexible to keep in life’s race. When we are “pliable in our faith” we are able to “roll with the punches,” to bend without breaking. We need to be willing to make a mid-course correction when it’s needed.
Being pliable does not mean compromising or having a wishy-washiness faith!
It does mean though that we have an attitude of determination to adjust to life’s challenges.
I learned to drive in Rhodesia which meant the steering wheel was on the right side and we drove on the left side of the road. Then we came to the States and I had to “make a course correction” in my driving! Over here the steering wheel is on the left and we drive on the right side of the road! Can you imagine how long I would last if I was not “flexible” and adapt my driving to the American rules of the road? The very thought defies logic and quite hair-raising to say the least!!
So too in our walk of faith when we are flexible it enables us to stay on course; to trust God for wisdom and to fine-tune our responses to the changing circumstances.
Pliability also has the component of a commitment to take action. Remember, big doors swing on little hinges; taking small steps of faith will move us forward!
Faith also needs to have the aspect firmness which is the “twin sister” of flexibility!
Being FIRM in our faith gives us the resolve not to quit. We will encounter problems that leave us no option but to stand still; BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN WE ARE QUITING!
The Israelites found themselves between the Red Sea and the Egyptian army and initially all they could do was STAND STILL and wait for God’s leading
Exodus 14:13-14 (NKJV) “And Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever. The LORD will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.”
In the tightest of spots, God had Moses give the Children of Israel these instructions:
(a) Don’t give in to fear………don’t let fear decide your response.
(b) Stand still……. stop irrational, emotion-driven reactions but stand still trusting God’s leading.
(c) Look for God’s way forward……faith trusts God to take action, fight on our behalf and put the enemy to flight .
(d) Be ready to move forward when He opens the way.
FLEXIBILITY AND FIRMNESS – our faith in action. Simple but powerful steps we can take when we don’t know what to do.
